3 Simple Steps To Turn Your Passion Into Profit

3 Simple steps to turn your passion into profit

Creating an online business from scratch can seem intimidating. Especially if you’re kind of new to the online business space.

I’ve been there. I had a passion to enjoy the freedom of working online for years before I actually took the plunge, and made it happen. I was SO intimidated by all that I felt I had to learn before actually starting.

In this blog post, I’m sharing the 5 simple steps to turn something you’re passionate about into something that will make you money. Creating your own business from a passion is not just a pipe dream. It IS possible. Here are the five steps to making it happen.

Simple Step #1:

  • Choose a Niche that is equal parts Passion & Trending

I know, I know! I said the dirty word…niche

I have had an aversion to this word over the years too so I completely understand the frustration that is attached to it.

I think about Niche’s very differently than what’s out there being taught mainstream. I use this word very loosely. Just as a way to think about what you want to talk about in categories.

I don’t even think you have to stick to one, or they necessarily have to do with each other. The sky is the limit when it comes to what you want to do, and I can show you how to be multi passionate if thats what you wanna do, but we are talking about getting started. I definitely recommend getting started with one thing, and then add to it later.

The truth is, the old way of “Niching” is out. Used to, someone could start a lifestyle blog, or instagram account and share random things about their life and what they liked and people could kind of live vicariously through them and it worked. Now it’s different, the people watching you want to be the hero. The star of the show in some way. Wether, you’re entertaining them, helping them with something, giving advice that really offers a transformation. This doesn’t mean that the old way doesn’t still exist. They definitely do, but most people started when that way of doing things was profitable and their following loves them so much they stuck around. So what do we do now?

The path of least resistance is to pick a “NICHE” that you can divide into 3 categories.

  • Broad
  • Semi-Broad
  • Narrow

An example of this is:

  • Weight loss
  • Weight loss using keto
  • Weight loss using keto, and counting macros

See what we did there? We took a passion, someone lost weight using keto, and we narrowed it, and kept narrowing to squeeze every once of value out of a topic they were really passionate about. This way it’s really hard to run out of content, and you’re reaching a broad audience. AND weight loss is something that people really care about.

I know the popular advice out there is: “Anything can be a niche.” “You can sell anything!” This may be true to an extent, but the people that I see saying this have a swindling type energy about them and I don’t like doing business like that at all. It gives me the ICK actually. People HAVE to care about it.

I like serving people what they actually want, giving them information that they already see as valuable. When you do this, selling isn’t sleazy at all. It’s helpful and that makes a HUGE difference!

Simple Step #2

  • Figuring out a schedule

Another BIG myth out there is: “Just fit your online business into the nooks and crannies of your life.”

This is all well and good maybe for someone who doesn’t have kids, or has a life that is pretty fluid. One you can move things around a lot and it’s not a big deal. BUT if you’re a mom, then you know, that if there’s a nook or cranny in your day then the kids, housework, or SOMETHING is going to fill it. I mean a mom’s job is NEVER done. So if you already don’t have even the smallest amount of time, what do you do?

As a mom of 3 super high energy kids who never slow down this is what I have done.

  • Instead of trying to keep my toddler and baby busy and work at the same time and feeling like I’m not giving either them or my business my 100%. I give my kids my full attention in the morning. They get up, have breakfast, we do toddler learning time, and then she independently plays for 1 hour while the baby takes her nap and I work. This took some practice of learning boundaries and what was expected of her during this time but the more you do it the more normal it becomes. I’ve had some moms ask me “don’t you feel guilty being separated from her for the hour while you work”? and my answer is absolutely NO!
    1. I’m with her so much more than I would be if I was at a 9-5
    2. She’s learning real life skills of problem solving, independent play, and she knows that she can always come get me when she needs me. (i’m only a few feet away from her room.)
    3. I know we as moms don’t talk about money a lot but I’d feel a lot more guilty if I couldn’t provide for her what she needs.

*I just want to caution you about falling into the guilt trap! I know from experience, that it’s possible to feel guilty from starting the business, and it’s possible to feel guilty if you don’t bring in an income for your family and I don’t want you to feel guilty for either! Just decide what your goals are for your family and balance the tasks you have to do to achieve those goals with where your family is and you’ll be fine!

  • Be flexible! There are no rules here. I definitely try to wrap up all tasks by 2:30-3 so I can get my big kid from school OR wait till my husband gets home if there’s something that can’t wait until the next day or something has to be scheduled. Once I let go of how I was “supposed” to work I was so much more relaxed and things got so much easier! Simple Step #3

Marketing your new business

This one is HUGE! So many people think they will create their main offer and website, add some social media and they will be off to the races bringing in so much money they don’t know what to do with it all. This is just not how it works. Just because you build it does not mean they will come.

BUT the good news is I’m going to give you the sales equation and am not going to ask you to pay an arm and a leg for how to get started with this like I had to. Here it is:

  • Get visible and find out where the people you want to help are. Are they in a facebook group? Networking event? Searching for blogs, articles, information? Do they want to be entertained with a little info sprinkled in?
  • Give them the answers they are looking for for free. Yup, you heard that right! It’s not sexy but it’s so worth it! If you feel like you should be getting paid for what you know then thats a good sign you’re on the right track. Give someone a transformation without any expectations and the money will come I promise!
  • When someone does purchase from you, roll out the red carpet for them. If they paid 500 make them feel like they are getting 5,000 in value from the experience.

It’s really not hard to make an income online. It’s actually really simple. The hard part is getting out of your own way and letting your goals happen! I’d love to hear from you! Are you an online business owner yet OR do you want to be one?
